Denver Historic Hotel

The Oxford Hotel
1600 17th Street
Denver, CO 80202

Built at the crest of the silver bonanza, The Oxford’s classic exterior belied an extravagant interior, as curious opening day guests discovered on October 3, 1891. There were dining rooms, a barber shop, a library, a pharmacy, a telegraph office, stables and a splendid saloon. Antique oak furnishings, marble and carpet floors, sterling silver chandeliers and stained glass glistened. Expanded in 1902 and again in 1912, the hotel was transformed into an Art Deco showcase by architect Charles Jaka in the 1930s. A three-year restoration completed in 1983 revealed original architectural details behind false ceilings and Art Deco panels down in the basement.

The inn later catered to miners and businessman traveling between Leadville and Colorado Springs, and by the end of the nineteenth century health enthusiasts were arriving to take advantage of the mineral waters at Manitou Springs. With Pikes Peak as a magnificent backdrop for the inn’s Rocky Mountain Victorian architecture, the Cliff House is Colorado’s second oldest operating hotel.
