Lawrence Historic Hotel Eldridge
Hotel The Eldridge Hotel is the only business in town still in business on the spot where it stood before Kansas was admitted to the Union. Also known as the Free State Hotel, the Eldridge was built and rebuilt over the years, as pro-slavery forces destroyed it (1856). Quantrill’s raiders attacked it (1863), and its owner demolished it (1924 to make way for the five-story hotel that stands today. During Kansas’ bloody territory days, the hotel offered refuge to settlers promoting the Free State cause; after its destruction owner Shalor Eldridge pledged that each time the hotel was destroyed, it would be rebuilt and another story added. Today the all-suite hotel (built in 1926, restored and reopened in 1986) offers warmly-furnished suites stocked with amenities and enjoys tree-lined, university town surroundings in historic downtown Lawrence. Wichita Historic Hotel Radisson
Broadview Hotel Built in 1922 along the banks of the Arkansas River, the Broadview Hotel soon became one of the Midwest’s premiere hotels. During Prohibition, the Broadview’s basement was rumored to be a speakeasy, featuring a 600-seat restaurant as well as nightly drinking and gambling. The hotel was also renowned for its grand lobby, uniquely shaped and resplendently outfitted with ornamental moldings and chandeliers. In 1948, the Crystal Ballroom was added with its exquisite mosaic mural by Native American artist Blackbear Bosin, which depicts “The Advance of Civilization in Kansas.” After undergoing a detailed, year-long renovation, the hotel reopened in 2002, again to be “the” unparalleled facility in Wichita.
