Red Wing, MN hotel

James Hotel Nestled between limestone bluffs on the banks of the Mississippi River, Red Wing was the world’s largest primary wheat market in the early 1870s. In 1875, local businessmen built the St. James in celebration of the city’s prosperity. Operated by the Lillyblad family for 72 years, its restaurant was renowned. Trains would regularly stop so that passengers could enjoy dining at “Clara’s.” Purchased by the Red Wing Shoe Company, the Italianate hotel enjoyed a detailed restoration, completed in 1979. Each of the guest rooms is named for a 19th-century riverboat and is individually decorated in Victorian antiques and reproductions, including handmade quilts and period wallcoverings. |
