St Francis The Hotel St. Francis traces its history to the Palace Hotel, built in the 1880s. When it was destroyed by fire, the owners rebuilt in 1923, joining a two-story, 1888 building on the north side with a new three-story building to create the Hotel St. Francis. During the 1930s and 1940s, when the state capitol was across the street, the hotel was a popular gathering place for politicians. Each uniquely decorated room and suite features high ceilings and casement windows—many with views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains—and is furnished with brass or iron beds and period pieces in cherry and oak.
