Warwick New York In 1927 publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst built the 36-story The Warwick New York as a residential hotel, which included private apartments for his Hollywood friends. The $5 million Hearst spent on the Renaissance Revival-style structure shows in the rich architectural detailing, but the lobby was deliberately kept small to enhance the hotel’s residential atmosphere and better ensure privacy—a feature that made The Warwick the hotel of choice for the Beatles as well as many other celebrities, including Cary Grant, a 12-year resident. The oversized guest rooms and huge suites are spacious and stylishly furnished with mahogany armoires and marble baths. Twice damaged by fire—in 1893 and 1914—Sagamore III opened July 1, 1930. In 1954 the hotel hosted the Governors Conference at which Thomas E. Dewey and Richard M. Nixon were but two of the noted guests. This grand, full-service Adirondack resort offers accommodations in the main hotel and lakeside cottages. Putnam Hotel & Conference Center The Gideon Putnam Hotel dates back to 1935; Gideon himself dates back to early America, when he settled in what would become Saratoga Springs in 1795. Ten years later he established the village, whose mineral spring waters drew ever more visitors to his tavern and guesthouse. Good fortunes would later dry up in Saratoga, and the Gideon Putnam Hotel was built in 1935 as a major New Deal project that included recreation and theater facilities. The Georgian-style inn, evocative of Putnam’s era, is set on 2,000 scenic acres in Spa State Park, a National Historic Landmark District.
