The original Bavarian capital offers visitors a fascinating contrast between contemporary living, historic culture and ornate architecture. Of course, the city is also famous for its annual beer festival, the Oktoberfest.
A city that hosted the Olympics and the World Cup, Munich has two very different sides to its culture: the modern, fashionable bars and restaurants sit alongside traditional beer houses and baroque works of art. While the main language spoken in Munich is German, a local dialect is also spoken by its inhabitants; however, a number of the city’s residents speak English.
Looming over the city are the towers of the Church of Our Lady, a symbol of the city and, perhaps, one of its most famous landmark. To the north is the impressive palace, home to the
erstwhile rulers of Bavaria, the Wittelsbach family, until 1918. Today, this building shares its place in the city with numerous museums, art galleries, bars and beer halls.
A short distance from The Alps, Munich is a popular tourist destination throughout the year, although the Oktoberfest, which takes place in September and October, is when the city is at its busiest.
